If you're going to give it a shot, I recommend artists like Sakamoto Kyu, Teresa Teng, Okuda Tamio, and GReeeN. Then there's the issue of getting the words to fit the rhythm and key, so the words might sound different in regular conversation. The vocabulary used in songs - and movies, too - are much more dramatized. For instance some Americans sound much like Hollywood characters, complete with cheesy lines and jokes, but the Japanese are much more reserved as a whole (ever watch a Hollywood action movie dubbed in Japanese? It's pretty awkward). Modern songs (which most want to learn) tend to have words that are not commonplace in real-life conversation, and I feel that it's more so in Japanese. It's like reading manga, you'll learn faster if you stick to slice of life stories set in the present rather than fantasy/sci-fi with jargon. Not the first recommendation to learn Japanese.
